Dear Skykomish Valley Residents,
Every year, in the spring, summer and fall, the Pacific NW experiences massive herbicide and pesticide spraying on industrial tree plantations in Washington, Oregon and beyond.
Out of three seasons, fall with its weathered foliage and cool, calm and dry days is the most popular time for the timber corporations and WA State DNR to spray toxic herbicides on industrial tree plantations of WA State.
Toxic sprays contaminate watersheds of numerous communities, including those of the Skykomish River Valley, with a soup of toxic chemicals and is against WA laws. Some of the spray ingredients include Glyphosate, Imazapyr, Atrazine, Clopyralid, Hexazinone, 2,4-D.
The EPA registers herbicides and pesticides for legal use. That does not mean that those chemicals are “safe,” even when used according to their labels.
The Poison Papers is a diverse set of internal memos, court depositions, and other documents detailing pesticide and chemical safety concerns of companies, government regulators, and their employees.
Washington State Department of Agriculture regulates use of toxic chemicals in Washington State, and can enforce existing laws. DNR (Washington State Department of Natural Resources) approves applications for spraying on industrial tree plantations.
Timber corporations and DNR may aerially or manually spray pesticides on recently harvested or recently re-planted industrial tree plantations every year in spring, summer and fall in dry, fairly calm weather.
Please stay safe, be aware of, watch out and take photos and notes of helicopters with spraying rods, trucks with strange liquid cargo and people with spraying backpacks, hazmat suits and respirators. We will be glad if you share your observations with us by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by sending a message to our Facebook page @SVENAofSky.
Aerial spraying of herbicides and pesticides on industrial tree plantations does not require notification and can take place any and multiple times during 3 years when FPA is active. Ground spraying does not require paperwork or notification and can take place any time and any place without warning.
